Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Business Administration by the Universidad Comercial de Deusto (Bilbao) and in Finance and Strategic Planning by the University of Leeds (United Kingdom). 

He is currently Chairman of the Advisory Board of Deusto Business School, founder and Chairman of Fundación Garum, advisor to Advantere School of Management, and Chairman of Fundación de Estudios de Economía Aplicada (FEDEA).

He is also a member of the boards of trustees of the Confederación Española de Directivos y Ejecutivos (CEDE) and Fundación Pro Real Academia Española, and an honorary trustee of the Spain-U.S. Council.

He has held the positions of Chairman of CaixaBank (2012-2025), Chairman of Bankia (2012-2021), Chairman of Fundación Caixabank Dualiza (formerly Fundación Bankia por la Formación Dual) (2016-2025), Chairman of the Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros (2012-2025), Vice Chairman of COTEC (2012-2025), Vice Chairman of CECA (until 2025), Vice Chairman of the Comité Ejecutivo de la Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros (2012-2024), Chairman and CEO of the state holding company BFA Tenedora de Acciones (2012-2021), Vice Chairman and Board Member of Telefónica and Repsol (2002), and CEO of BBVA Bank and CITIC Bank China (2001-2009).
