The "Friends of Thoreau" Program on American Environmentalism and Nature Conservation in North America, inspired on the philosopher, activist and writer Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), was established at the Research Institute for North American Studies of the University of Alcalá in 2001.
The financial base of the Program is an endowment by Dr Marvin Douglas, when he passed away in 2003, which consolidated for the future the continuity of the activities which had started at the Institute in 2001 under the sponsorship of the non profit organization of the same name "Friends of Thoreau".
The "Friends of Thoreau" Program on American Environmentalism and Nature Conservation in North America carries out its mission by iniciating scholars and graduate students, interested in North American Studies, into the uniqueness of U.S. landscapes, bodiversity, geography, law, policies, and other environmental disciplines and the related philosophy and ethics. The Program is also focused on the role that Nature has played in conforming the U.S. history, as well as how "environmentalism", and the way the individual relates to nature, has shaped American society and has become a main feature of U.S. culture, in addition of being one of its most relevant contribution to universal thought and science.
