3rd Biennial EASLCE (2008)

The European Association for the Study of Literature, Culture and the Environment (EASLCE) held its 3rd Biennial Conference in Alcalá de Henares from October 16th-19th, 2008, under the theme  “Cultural Landscapes: Heritage and Conservation.”

The Association was founded at the March 2004 conference at the University of Münster, “Literature, Culture, Environment: Positioning ‘Ecocriticism’.” The need for a European association, rather than multiple national associations, was identified as the result of discussions taking place at the conference in Bretton Hall (Leeds) of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment, United Kingdom (ASLE UK) the previous year. EASLCE’s 2nd Conference took place in Klagenfurt, Austria from April 28th to May 1st, 2006, under the theme of ‘Water: Literary, Cultural and Environmental Perspectives’.

The main aim of EASLCE is to provide a European forum for the exchange of ideas and information about literary and other cultural representations of, and reflections on, human relationships with the natural world. It seeks to facilitate dialogue between people working in cultural ecology and in literary and cultural studies in the different European countries, and to encourage interdisciplinary cooperation with environmental historians, philosophers, psychologists, linguists, art historians, scientists, and scholars in other relevant disciplines. It also seeks to promote the incorporation of environmental concerns and awareness into pedagogical theory and practice.
