Students can participate in different volunteering opportunities, which help them support the local community, integrate more into Spanish society and increase their cultural awareness and skills. In the orientation sessions students are informed about different options (environmental activities, assisting teachers in schools, special education volunteering…).
Also, students can enroll in the course “Service Learning in a Bilingual Context” (45h/3 credits) where they do 15 hours (1 credit) of service learning in a bilingual school in Alcalá de Henares. This course offers an ideal context to gain some experience working in a Spanish cultural environment. Students learn about the challenges and opportunities that bilingual education poses for administrators, teachers and students. This course offers an introduction and overview of bilingual education and programs, and it is especially recommended for students who would like to enroll in the Graduate Teach & Learn program at the Franklin Institute.
