Spanish for health care professionals

This course is designed for future health professionals (doctors, nurses, medical assistants, paramedics, EMTs, administrators) who need to use Spanish in their workplace. The course has a practical approach, which includes learning medical terminology, understanding the most commonly used grammatical structures and learning cultural aspects which every health care professional should know. The objectives of this course are as follows:

Spanish Culture and Civilization

This course is for all students interested in gaining a better understanding of Spanish culture and civilization. Building on a backgraound of socio-historical factors, students will investigate the processes involved in constructing the Spanish national identity by studying, in a systematic approach, its different historical periods. The program embarks from the impressive pre-historic cave paintings and concludes with 20th Century contemporary Spain in the European Union.

Comparing Spain and the USA. Politics and social satatus.

The objective of this course is to study different aspects of present day Spain and the United States from a comparative viewpoint. Issues such as everyday life and customs, cultural diversity, economic and political institutions, religion, immigration, ethnic relations and questions of identity of both countries will be analyzed. Special emphasis will be given to issues of social diversity, as well as the need to avoid existing stereotypes.
