Between May 27th-29th Instituto Franklin - UAH and the Department of “Filología Moderna” of the Universidad de León, in collaboration with ADECHAN (Asociación Española para el Estudio y Diálogo de las Culturas Hispanas en América del Norte), held the Seventh International Conference on Chicano Literature in León. The topic of this conference was "Writing the Landscape/ Landscapes of Writing”, with both Spanish and English as official languages.
The conference was attended by more than 120 participants from 11 different countries, who met to share their knowledge in this field of literature and other disciplines related to the Chicano community. During the event, tributes in memory of Héctor Torres, Rolando Hinojosa and Luis Leal, one of the more important writers and scholars on Chicano literature, were offered.
During the conference, three plenary sessions took place . The first, titled “We are all Serafina's Children: Racial Landscapes in Rudolfo Anaya,” was carried out by Professor Manuel Broncano from Texas A&M International University. On Friday, Genaro Padilla from the University of California, Berkeley, delivered “The Cultural Politics of Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá’s Historia de la Nueva Mexico: 400 years Ago and Today”. Finally, Norma E. Cantú from the University of Texas at San Antonio offered the plenary session “Sitio y Lengua: The Bordered Frontier and Chicano Cultural Production”.
The rest of the sessions that took place during the conference related to different aspects of Chicano literature and culture. Internationally known researchers examined in greater detail topics such as the Chicano identity, the role of the female writer, or Chicano or Latin Magazines in the United States, in round table talks.
The Seventh International Conference on Chicano Literature, which brought together researchers from more than 35 universities and international institutions, has been a great success, and Instituto Franklin - UAH has already begun to consider the details of the Eighth International Conference, which will take place in 2012 in Toledo, Spain.
