Instituto Franklin – UAH and its research group GIECO invited Dr. Annie Ingram, a recognized international expert in Ecocriticism, to give the conference “Ecocriticism: Using Words to Save the Earth” on April 8th at Colegio de Caracciolos of the Universidad de Alcalá.
She specializes in 19th Century literature and women’s literature, although she has expanded her interests to Ecocriticism, environmental literature, gender studies, and the literature of ethnic minorities in the United States. Currently, she is the coordinator of the Environmental Studies program at Davidson College (North Carolina). She is also the editor, together with Ian Marshall, Daniel J. Philippon and Adam W. Sweeting, of the book “Coming into Contact: Explorations in Ecocritical Theory and Perspective” (2007).
Dr. Ingram began her speech by mentioning the different definitions that researchers in the field of Ecocriticism use to refer to the term, summarizing them as the study of the relations between human beings and nature. According to her, applying Ecocriticism to literary texts can make us understand the cultural values of our society regarding the image we have of nature. Finally, Dr. Ingram stated that analyzing literature from an ecocritical perspective could allow us to reflect on our conception of natural environments in a positive way and could help us to propose alternative relations with nature.
The event, which included a large public audience, included the participation of three members of Instituto Franklin’s Board, José Morilla, Dean of the Facultad de Económicas at UAH; Luisa Juárez, Second Deputy Dean of the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras; and Carmen Flys, Secretary of the Departamento de Letras.
